NEW MESSAGE FROM PILLER
USA's got a new message from Piller.
It confirms my thoughts that The Very Thought Of You was the original title for The Man Who Never Was. There's spoilers galore so don't read if you don't want to know.

TIMES REVIEWS SPIDER
David Cronenberg's grim little psychodrama "Spider" is a cinematic maze whose dark, cramped passages spiral toward a terrifying cul de sac. Brilliantly realized but bone-chillingly bleak, the film, adapted from the 1990 novel by Patrick McGrath, tunnels into the warped imagination of Dennis Cleg (Ralph Fiennes), a k a Spider, a mumbling paranoid-schizophrenic man in his 30's discharged from a mental hospital after two decades of confinement
CAN FICTION BEAT FACTS?
Programming originally intended for broadcast ending up on cable is not without precedent. USA's "The Dead Zone" was first developed at UPN. HBO's "The Sopranos"started as a script deal at Fox.
"If the networks move away from quality scripted programs and we continue to have success as a group with quality scripted programs, we think it's a big opportunity for cable in that more good material, talent and ideas would come our way," USA Networks president Doug Herzog said.

CABIN PRESSURE'S WRITER
MORE ON CRONENBERG'S SPIDER
Spider began as a novel by British writer Patrick McGrath, and Cronenberg has rarely adapted anybody else's writing for the screen (Dead Zone, from a Stephen King novel, is the other exception). But some assume he couldn't resist it because the novel is inherently dark, concerning as it does a disturbed child who apparently kills his mother, and then spends his life as an adult writing a garbled diary recalling the event.
SCI FI HAS RECORD FEB
The SCI FI Channel reported its highest February prime-time ratings ever, averaging a 1.0 rating (777,000 households). That represented a 43 percent increase over the network's 0.7 rating last February and places SCI FI in the top 10 among all basic cable networks, the channel reported.
Stargate SG-1 remained SCI FI's top-rated original series. New episodes of Stargate SG-1 averaged a 1.6 rating (1.26 million households), a 78 percent improvement over February 2002, the network reported. SCI FI's Monday block of Stargate SG-1 reruns also got high ratings, doubling those in their time periods compared with 2002.
SCI FI scored high in several key demographics:
•Men 18-49 (0.7, ranked fifth)
•Persons 18-49 (0.5, ranking seventh)
•Men 25-54 (0.8, ranking fourth)
•Women 25-54 (0.5, ranking ninth)
•Persons 25-54 (0.7, ranking fifth)
•Total persons 2+ (0.5, ranking eighth)
The channel also ranked eighth in delivery of persons 18-49 and seventh for persons 25-54.

MORE NEWS ON THE LOT
Lowe goes home for mysterious TNT mini 'Salem'
NEW YORK -- Rob Lowe has been tapped to star in the upcoming TNT miniseries "Stephen King's Salem's Lot." Scheduled to begin shooting in April in Melbourne, Australia, the four-hour program will be co-produced by TNT and Warner Bros. Television. The miniseries will air sometime next year. Based on the best-selling Stephen King book, "Salem's Lot" features Lowe as a journalist who returns to the small town where he grew up to investigate mysteries, including a stranger who turns out to be a vampire. Lowe also stars in the TNT movie "Framed," which premieres April 13. Executive producers are Mark Wolper ("The Mists of Avalon") of the Wolper Organization and Jeff Hayes of Coote/Hayes. Mikael Solomon ("Band of Brothers") will direct from a script by Peter Filardi ("Flatliners"). Lowe is repped by CAA and managed by Bernie Brillstein at Brillstein-Grey. (Andrew Wallenstein)

CHRISTOPHER WALKEN NOMINATED FOR OSCAR
Still, since he earned that 1978 supporting actor statuette for his mesmerizing performance as a Vietnam War casualty in "The Deer Hunter," many believe he should have gotten nominations for roles in "Annie Hall," "Pennies From Heaven," "The Dead Zone," "At Close Range," "Biloxi Blues," "The Comfort of Strangers," "King of New York," "True Romance," "Pulp Fiction" and "The Funeral" among others.

NEW MESSAGE FROM PILLER
I decided not to do a grand finale this time - you may remember as we premiered, I was struggling with how to end the season (and we still haven't picked the last episode we'll broadcast). We worked for several weeks on a story that would have had all the various characters arcs colliding - Purdy, Stillson, Sarah, J.J., Walt - there was murder, and suicide, and blackmail, and a visitor from the future...

DAVID CRONENBERG IN THE EXAMINER
Yes, that's David Cronenberg roaming around Union Square today. His new flick is "Spider," with Ralph Fiennes, Miranda Richardson and Gabriel Byrne. Cronenberg is Canada's gift to the dominion of directordom. His credits include "The Fly," "Dead Ringers," "The Dead Zone," "Crash," "Videodrome" and "Naked Lunch."
DEAD ZONE BEATS MICHAEL JACKSON IN AUSTRALIA
The repeat of Living with Michael Jackson on Valentine's Day didn't do as well as the first screening, beaten by You Got Mail on Ten and The Dead Zone on Nine.
THE CASSANDRA SYNDROM
Cassandra, according to Greek myth, was the most beautiful daughter of King Priam, so beautiful that the god Apollo granted her the gift of prophesy in return for sexual favors. Cassandra accepted the gift but reneged on the bargain, so Apollo took away her power of persuasion: She could speak only the truth but no one would ever believe her. When she tried to warn her fellow Trojans of impending disaster -- that the wooden horse they had just wheeled into the city was full of enemy soldiers -- everyone thought she was crazy. And so fell Troy.
Morgan sees society's need for a Cassandra figure reflected in such TV shows as "Miracles," "The Dead Zone" or "The X-Files." "TV and movies are the modern myth makers," she said, "and we are still obsessed with people we perceive to have a special access to the truth."
DID YOU NOTICE
The 10 copies of the book that Jonah had in his hand, which made the Bookstore Manager happy that finally someone (Johnny) had purchased it was the novel version of the movie, Star Trek: Insurrection(1998). The screenplay was written by "The Dead Zone's" exec. producer/creator, Michael Piller. This seems to be a joke commenting on the movie receiving a very mix response from both critics and Star Trek fans.
Series regulars, Nicole de Boer and Chris Bruno do not appear in this episode.
The production code of 2001 shows that this was the first episode filmed for the second season.
This episode was scheduled to air on 2/14/03 on the "Sci-Fi Channel", but Valley of the Shadow was reaired instead.

ALLY SHEEDY IN UPCOMING MOVIE
In his new film, "Happy Here and Now," Michael Almereyda looks into the future and sees computer chat rooms where participants can project fictitious identities, or "avatars," into cyberspace to do their talking for them. Set in the backwaters of New Orleans, the story involves a woman who disappears after embarking on a virtual relationship with a shadowy philosophical cowboy named Eddie Mars. Shalom Harlow plays the woman and Karl Geary is Eddie; the cast also includes David Arquette, Liane Balaban, Ernie K-Doe, Gloria Reuben, Ally Sheedy and Clarence Williams III.
DEAD ZONE GOOD NEWS FOR LIONSGATE
Who says there are no opportunities for indie producers in television these days? Lions Gate Entertainment is steadily expanding its small-screen activities on the heels of its success with the USA Network drama series "The Dead Zone." Lions Gate Television president Kevin Beggs is juggling a slate of series and telefilm development projects, including drama series prospects at NBC, USA Network and Lifetime. "We're trying to keep developing a variety of things but do them efficiently with low overhead," Beggs said. "We get an offer to (partner) with people on new shows every week, but we're selectively taking our shots. It's got to make financial sense for us, too." "The Dead Zone," based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, was a project that Lions Gate and co-producer Paramount International TV shepherded through a false start at UPN in 2001, when the show was given a midseason order but never made it on the air. Early last year, the show relocated to USA, where it became an instant hit in its debut last summer.
CRONENBERG TAKES PAINKILLERS
Director David Cronenberg (eXistenZ, The Dead Zone) told SCI FI Wire that his next film, Painkillers, will find him once again tapping into the SF vein. "I've been saying that it's about performance artists in the future, but in the near future," Cronenberg said in an interview. "That's all I can really say, because I'm rewriting it, and it's sort of a deep rewrite. I haven't looked at it in a while, and now I'm coming back to it."
Cronenberg confirmed rumors that both Nicolas Cage and Ralph Fiennes (who appears in the director's upcoming Spider) are considering playing the lead character in Painkillers. "No one is attached," he said. "No one has made a deal. But yes, Nic Cage has read the first draft and liked it and said he was interested. And, yes, Ralph has read the same script and said he would be interested in doing it. So that's good. Maybe I should get them both in the movie. Now that would be interesting."

SARASOTA FILM FEST
Criticized in the past for sometimes focusing too much on their glamorous events and not the caliber of films they choose, this year festival programmers showed they could attract quality work. Opening night at the beautiful Van Wezel Performing Arts Center featured the cute comedy"Kiss the Bride" (starring Sean Patrick Flanery, Amanda Detmer, Burt Young, Talia Shire, Alyssa Milano, and Johnathon Schaech) playing to a packed house of 1700 film fans. Director Vanessa Parise successfully pokes fun at the stress and pressure a family goes through to pull off a wedding, while dealing with the drama of everyday life. But unfortunately most will describe it as the Italian version of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."
WALKEN BELIEVES HIT FILMS HELP WITH NOMINATION
Walken has honed his trademark quirky creepiness in memorable turns in "The Dead Zone" (1983), "True Romance" (1993) and "Pulp Fiction" (1993) but Oscar recognition has eluded him since his first win.
PILLER2 INTERVIEW!
TP: One of the great and innovative things going on is the The Dead Zone website and how it's being run. I don't know if was Michael's idea, or yours, but what are your thoughts on having the scripts and treatments online. It's a really great idea for writers and devoted fans of the series.
Shawn Piller: I think it's fun to have that online. When you get to be in Michael's position, I think he likes to give back to people younger than him who don't always have the perspective or experience… because you're still learning and growing. Michael looks back on his career and of course he's really proud of it but he also really reflects on people that have helped him along the way. He's always been that way but I think he's figuring out in a way that, not only is it fun for him to do but it's also fun to give back. The process is so fascinating from the inside making the show that you can't help but believe that other people would find it fascinating too. We just think it's cool for the website but the other thing we're doing is the "D" storylines and try to literally do what we talked about in college like, "How can we change television?" It's something we always talked about but even if it's low budget we try and do it. We have a person dedicated to it and I don't know how many are doing that.

Modern Entertainment announced today (Feb 10) that it is expanding its distribution operations to include international sales of new feature films, with the first three titles named as The Pact, Liquid Bridge and Fear Of Speed. The company will be offering all three for worldwide theatrical and television distribution at AFM next week. Until now Modern’s core business has centred on distributing titles from its 500-plus library to distributors and broadcasters. However in the past three years it has moved into co-producing and distributing formats, reality shows and dramatic series, for example with Lions Gate on the hit USA Network series, Stephen King’s The Dead Zone.

ALIVE IN THE DEAD ZONE
Last season, the filming of the 13 episodes went from March to August. Then the cast and crew had two months off, and came back for a second season of another 13 episodes in September. The new season started airing Jan. 5.
Right now, they are filming episode 11. They will complete this season's filming by the end of the third week of February.
"Michael Piller often uses a 'Christ metaphor' for the show," explains Hall, a practicing Catholic. "The character I'm playing is a mystic, an empath who helps people, and I want to make it believable. I take it seriously, but I'm having a good time.
There will be several guest stars this season including Gerald McRaney, Robert Culp and British actor Peter Wingfield, as well as former "Brat Pack" member, Ally Sheedy, one of Hall's co-stars in "The Breakfast Club."

NOT REALLY A 'BREAKFAST CLUB' REUNION
Two members of "The Breakfast Club" will work together again, 18 years after appearing in the teen movie, but the re-teaming is not exactly a club reunion.
Ally Sheedy will join Anthony Michael Hall in an upcoming episode of Hall's USA Network series "The Dead Zone." Sheedy and Hall shared the screen with Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson and Molly Ringwald in writer-director John Hughes' 1985 examination of high school social dynamics -- in which five kids from different cliques spent a Saturday together in the school library to atone for various violations of school rules.
The episode will also feature an appearance by John Kapelos -- known to "Breakfast Club" aficionados as Carl, the high school janitor from the movie.

BREAKFAST CLUB REUNION
Ally Sheedy and Anthony Michael Hall -- two stars of the 1985 John Hughes pic -- will be reunited onscreen in an episode of Hall's USA Network series "The Dead Zone."
After go-rounds on various "Breakfast Club" reunion storylines and schedule scenarios with the film's stars, USA, the show's producers and Sheedy opted for an episode titled "Playing God," which does not revive any "Breakfast Club" characters.
In the seg, likely to air this spring, Sheedy portrays an old flame of Hall's precognitive character Johnny looking to divine the future of her brother, who has an ailing heart.
A proposed "Breakfast Club" storyline "wasn't right," says Jeff Wachtel, USA's exec VP of series and longform programming, but "Johnny finding an old flame, that seemed more organic."
John Kapelos, who portrayed Carl the janitor in "Breakfast Club," also will be featured in the seg.
Wachtel also may look at other former co-stars of Hall's, such as those from "Edward Scisssorhands," for guest shots.
USA and the show's producers -- who have landed Robert Culp, Tracey Gold and Sean Patrick Flanery to guest in other episodes -- are eager to parlay such stunt casting.
"It breaks us out from the pack a little bit, gives viewers another hook, as well as giving TV guide writers another reason to write about that episode," Wachtel says.
