ABC BELIEVES IN"MIRACLES"
Looks like ABC wants in on the paranormal bandwagon. Miracles was recently advertised in my local theatre and I must admit I thought it was a movie and couldn't wait to see it. It premieres tonight on ABC at 10PM EST.
The pillowy title is a smokescreen: "Miracles" is even more of a hardcore trip into "X-Files" territory than NBC's little-seen 2000 skein "The Others," Pax's "Mysterious Ways" or USA's Stephen King adaptation "The Dead Zone." And this is the mass-appeal version: ABC execs originally planned to make the lead character a bona fide priest, ensuring unwanted attention based on last year's laundry list of controversies and scandals.

DEAD ZONE GETS A MENTION IN THE KANSAS CITY STAR
The Kansas City Star mentions The Dead Zone in an article for those "less-football inclined"
There are those among us who are having second thoughts about watching the Super Bowl. After all, it will hurt to see the Raiders win because...they're the Raiders. And it will hurt to see Tampa Bay win because, if Warren Sapp and Keyshawn Johnson were unbearable before, imagine how they'll be with a Super Bowl ring

• USA will have "Dirty Dancing" on at kickoff time. From 7 p.m. it will repeat episodes of "The Dead Zone," starting with "Descent" and "Ascent" in that order.

They offer a list of all things anti-Super Bowl to watch
(I'd double check your local listings for the Marathons time as I think it's 8PM EST.)

Marathon includes the frist 3 episodes of the season!

Since we didn't want your loyalty to Johnny Smith to force you to miss
the Super Bowl, there won't be a new episode of "The Dead Zone" this
week. The next new episode, entitled "The Outsider," premieres on
Sunday, February 2 at 10PM/9C

JOHNNY'S SUPERBOWL PREDICTIONS
Speaking of the Super Bowl, Johnny's alter ego, Anthony Michael Hall,
predicts a victory for quarterback Brad Johnson and the Tampa Bay

TWOP RECAPS
Descent's full recap is now available and the Ascent recaplet is up as well!
Johnny asks Walt if he hears anything. Walt doesn't. Johnny has another vision of a bunch of miners walking out of the mine, and one of them calls out, "Move along, Stengel." All of the miners give Johnny the gas face as they walk out. Johnny tells Walt, "This mine seems to know me by name." Walt echoes my sentiment by saying, "What the hell's that supposed to mean?" Johnny says he wishes he knew. Again with the mystery.

RATING DIPS HIT 'ZONE', 'SHIELD'
Jan. 17, 2003

NEW YORK -- A pair of cable original dramas cooled off a week after heating up their season premieres. USA's "The Dead Zone" and FX's "The Shield" both saw their household rating drop by about one-fifth for the second episodes of their second seasons. Sunday's "Zone" received a 2.6 rating, down 19% from its debut week. Tuesday's "Shield" dropped 22% to a 2.8 rating. In the 18-49 demographic, "Zone" stayed almost flat week-to-week, notching a 2.1 rating; "Shield" dropped a full rating point to 2.3. MTV's "The Osbournes," which airs opposite the final 30 minutes of "Shield," also dropped, scoring a season-low 3.5 in its target 12-34 demo and a 3.0 household rating, down from 3.3 the previous week. Lead-in "The Real World" has outperformed "Osbournes" among viewers 12-34 in its last two airings, though "World" is slightly down in that demo from its performance last month. In other cable ratings news, TBS' "America's Prince: The John F. Kennedy Jr. Story" led all basic cable nets among viewers 18-49 (2.5 million viewers) and 25-54 (2.7 million) on Sunday. "Prince" pushed TBS to the top of the cable heap for the week in primetime for the 18-49 demo. A&E got encouraging ratings results from the Sunday premiere of "Benedict Arnold: A Question of Honor." The film notched a 2.5 household rating, making it the most-watched A&E original of the past 12 months. (Andrew Wallenstein)

The Good: First off, watch for the season-two premiere of FX's Emmy winner The Shield (Tues., 10 p.m.), just as the DVD box set of season one hits stores (Fox Home Entertainment). And there's tons more quality tube coming your way: new Oz episodes on HBO (Sun., 9 p.m.); the second season of USA's terrific Dead Zone, starring Anthony Michael Hall (Sun., 10 p.m.); season three of Lifetime's The Division (Sun., 8 p.m.), with new castmember Dean Cain; and the WB's High School Reunion (Thurs., 8 p.m.), engaging coverage of real classmates coming together ten years after graduation (the Most Likely to Succeed hasn't necessarily, and the school bully comes off like the ass you always knew he was).

DEAD ZONE COMES TO CANADA
Halifax Daily News has an article on upcoming shows.
Stephen King fans can rejoice. After a hugely successful run in the U.S. starting last June, the new series The Dead Zone is coming to town (premiering Tuesday on Space at 10 p.m.). In case you don’t remember the 1983 movie: a happy, engaged teacher (Anthony Michael Hall replaces Christopher Walken) emerges from a six-year coma to find his fiancee (Nicole deBoer) remarried and with a son. But even worse, he’s acquired the ability to foresee the future, which is not as much of a gift as you might think. The series was created by a writer-producer on the three TV Star Treks: TNG, DSN and Voyage.

UK INFO ON THE DEAD ZONE
Looks like the SCI-FI UK will begin season 2 of TDZ on 10th, at 9pm GMT. The first episode; Valley of the Shadows

CANADIAN DEAD ZONE NEWS
The Dead Zone debuts on The New VI in Canada on Jan. 15 at 10 pm ET/PT.
This show is zoned for cool paranormal activities
When The Dead Zone premiered in the U.S. in June, it became the highest-rated dramatic series to debut on basic cable, drawing more than 6.4 million viewers. (That is like 100,000 people showing up to your garage sale.)
The show, which started its second season in the U.S. this month, has already built a loyal following.

Speaking of writing, sometimes it helps to hire a fact-checker. In an attempt to modernize the story, several references are made to the cultural highlights that transpired while Johnny was out of it — Mark McGwire's home run record, the Clinton-Lewinsky affair, invention of Caller ID, the emergence of Shania Twain and the O.J. Simpson case.

But here's the problem: Those last three items happened before 1996. Somewhere Nostradamus is rolling his eyes.

Airing Tonight: The Dead Zone (Chum stations, 9 p.m.) is a new spinoff from the old movie that was, in turn, based on a good Stephen King novel. A guy almost dies and when he recovers finds that he can suddenly enter a mental zone in which he can know a person's fate just by touching them. That's the core of the plot. The guy with the dark, magic touch here is played by Anthony Michael Hall. It's not badly done, made in Canada and brimming with adolescent gloom. The title might also refer to how you'll feel if you're getting addicted to The Bachelorette, which airs at 8 p.m. on CITY-TV stations.

SAD NEWS FOR KING FANS

Genre Producer Monash Dead

Veteran Hollywood writer and producer Paul Monash, who produced the original Carrie movie, as well as TV's Salem's Lot, died Jan. 14 after a brief illness at his Los Angeles home, the Reuters news service reported. He was 86.

Monash was a writer and producer of widely praised television films, pilots and series and was also a producer who scoured the bookstalls for projects that included such cinematic films as Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five, Big Trouble in Little China and Stephen King's Carrie. Monash also wrote the TV miniseries Salem's Lot, based on a King novel, the wire service reported.

Born in New York's Harlem and raised in the Bronx, Monash said his goal at age 21 was "to write the American novel," but instead he rode the rails and lived as an expatriate in Paris. He eventually became a writer for television. In 2000, the Writers Guild of America gave him its Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for his lifetime achievement, the wire service reported.

Robbie and the producers of The Dead Zone are finalizing the arrangements for Robbie's first directing assignment on the USA / SCIFI Network original series. Filming will likely commence in late March or April.

Where do we know Mr. McNeill from? He's done work on the WB's hits Everwood and Dawson's Creek as well as countless other shows that have been hits or are fast becoming them.
I can't wait to see which Episode he does!
Thanks to Anne for the tip!

THE STALKING ZONE?
In a great article on Zap2it.com Mr. Hall and Mr. Pillar both discuss season 2 and it's changes from season 1.
There's a breif summay of what happened between episodes:
Basically, what happened between the two seasons is Johnny sat in his basement and started doing research to come up with a plan to avert what he sees as the end of the world," says Shawn Piller. "He's got index cards: the past on the left, the present in the middle and the future on the right. He's got a picture of Armageddon in the future, with Greg Stillson right next to that. He's got pins and a piece of string tied to all of these."

As well as somethings that might force them to make changes

Of course, if ABC picks up Flanery's Western pilot, "
Then Came Jones
," that could cause problems in future seasons. "My biggest fear," Michael Piller says, "is that Sean Patrick Flanery's going to wind up the star of his own series. You will see that Stillson is the best villain since J.R. Ewing to come along on television. The scenes between him and Johnny in our first major Stillson show of the year, 'Scars,' are just electric."

Spoilers abound, so don't read if you don't want to know!

CABLE THE ANSWER FOR '03'S VIEWING?
USA Today has an article on how Cable's original series could make televsion worth watching in 2003.
USA president Doug Herzog envisions more gains in 2003: "Why not? You've got Monk, The Shield, The Dead Zone all coming back. You're returning with some strength and then a lot of these networks are launching new shows. I think cable's got some real momentum."

DEAD ZONE HAS A SOLID PREMIERE
Zap2it.com has an article about The Dead Zone and The Shield's Premieres
On Sunday (Jan. 5), "The Dead Zone" returned to USA, drawing an audience of about 4.1 million. That's well below the 6.4 million who watched series debut last June, but nearly equal to the first season's average audience.

For what it's worth, "The Dead Zone" held the record for the most-watched second-season premiere in basic-cable history for all of two days, until "The Shield" surpassed it.

WHAT CHRISTOPHER WALKEN THINKS OF THE DEAD ZONE?

Christopher Walken: Self-Professed Oddball appears in Tv Guide On line
For those that do not already know, Mr. Walken played Johnny Smith in the original Stephen King Movie The Dead Zone in 1983.
He now plays Leonardo DiCaprio's father in Catch Me If You Can now in theatres
What does he think about TDZ as a series?

He was unaware that USA Network has parlayed his 1983 cult hit The Dead Zone into a weekly series, with Anthony Michael Hall succeeding him as the telepathic lead. "It's a continuing thing?" he asks. "What happens? I keep foreseeing things? What a nightmare!"

NEW LETTER FROM PILLER2
He tells how hard it was to bring Valley together and then explains the season run
There has been a little confusion about the length of our season. We've been told by USA all along that we would be doing 13 episode cycles. The additional nine scripts that they recently ordered will most likely be used to produce the next cycle which could begin next summer. All in all, we're doing 26 episodes this first year - as many as we did on each year of Star Trek.

New York, NY — January 7, 2003 — USA Network's second season premiere of the original series The Dead Zone set records on Sunday, January 5 (10-11 PM ET/PT). With 4.1 million viewers, The Dead Zone became the most-watched second season premiere of an original dramatic series on basic cable ever.

twist on Stephen King's novel

We're very much committed to satisfying the Stephen King audience," said series executive producer and writer Michael Piller

Steppin Out

The days when viewers went first to the broadcast networks out of inertia are gone forever," said Michael Jackson, chairman of Sci Fi owner Universal Television Group. He also pointed to basic-cable series of the past year including FX's "The Shield," MTV's "The Osbournes," and USA's "Monk" and "Dead Zone

Pop Culture

Thanks to shows including HBO's "Six Feet Under," MTV's "The Osbournes," E!'s "The Anna Nicole Show," USA's "The Dead Zone" and TLC's "Trading Spaces," 2002 was the first year in which cable topped network TV in aggregate ratings.

Mugs & Totes

Back for the Dead
USA Network's thriller The Dead Zone returns for season two on Jan. 5. In its first installment, the series averaged an impressive 3.1 rating with 4.2 million viewers. A sign of USA Network's original programming success: Dead Zone's Nielsen marks were second to USA's other summer series, Monk, which grabbed an average 3.4 rating and 4.5 million viewers.

Save My Show I have heard nothing of either USA or Sci Fi canceling the show. I found this link and wanted to share it

TWOP GIVES REVIEWS

Our mandate is, more or less, to give people a place to revel in their guilty televisual pleasures. In most cases, we have a complex love/hate relationship with the show, and this site is a way for us to work through those feelings. If we plain hated a show, we wouldn't pay it any attention at all.
