News on the 12 from 13 episodes

The Futon Critic is also questioning what's up with The Dead Zone's 13th episode?

THE DEAD ZONE (USA) - In a move that leads one of believe a fourth season of the cable drama is around the corner, USA has opted to hold back the show's final installment of its 13-episode third season, the conclusion to the two-part episode "Tipping Point." To make room for the move, USA will air just one episode ("Instinct") not two as originally reported on August 15 while the two episodes scheduled for August 22 will be "Shadows" and part one of "Tipping Point." No official reason for the change was given nor has USA formally decided about the fate of the series.

Nicole deBoer Answers Your Letters!

Nicole deBoer has finally gotten a chance to answer some of the fan's emails that are sent in from the offcial USA Network Site.

Thanks to Kelling, on the USA Messageboard for letting us know.

Here are a few of the Q and A's.

Q: What do you like and dislike most about being an actress?
- Sunnie Crowson, Alaska

NDB: What I love is I get paid to do something that I truly love. The part I don't like is all the waiting in between scenes. Also, I don't like being away from my husband John. And, like most actors, I don't like auditioning - it freaks me out. Thanks for your question.

Q: I have enjoyed your work in Star Trek: DS9 and The Dead Zone. I also enjoyed you on The Outer Limits and in the movie Cube. Are you currently working on any side projects?
- Scott, Jeffersonville, IN

NDB: A good deal of my non-Dead Zone time is spent with my husband John and his band All Systems Go on tour. The past two summers I did indie films. One is a comedy called Phil the Alien, where I play an assassin. The other one is a satire of reality TV called Public Domain where I play an alcoholic character that's obsessed with the '80s. Public Domain is making the rounds at film festivals around the country and Phil the Alien is in post production. Keep your eyes peeled for them both at a theatre near you.

AMH In Emmy Mag June 2004

Anthony Michael Hall appeared in Emmy Magagine, the June 2004 issue with Charlie Sheen on the cover. The full size picture has the breif article on it, but the image is fuzzy to read.
Here's what it says

HOT STAR: Anthony Michael Hall.

HOT GIG: Sends chills as psychic Johnny Smith on USA’s supernatural hit The Dead Zone.

SUMMER FUN: Hall, who rode to fame as the epitome of ’80s teen flick geekery, has really evolved. His show is unusually uplifting, as is his idea of a great day. At the Self-Realization Fellowship, an oasis of ponds, garden paths and meditational shrines in Pacific Palisades, he prays, writes in his journal and just stops to smell the incense. "A friend turned me on to the spot ten years ago. It’s a wonderful place for solitude." He’s also big on Kriya yoga, but his bull mastiff, Rey, hangs loose another way: "We drive up the coast, and he loves it. He’s a stick-your-head-out-the-window dog."

DOWNTIME DOWNSIDE: Every time he goes to the beach, "I’m reminded I can’t surf."

Will Season 3 Be Cut Short?!!

Sources say it appears at this time that there will be one episode on Aug 1, Speak Now, 1 episode on Aug 15th Cycle of Violence (possibly only showing at midnight) and 2 episodes on the Aug 22nd, Shadows and Tipping Point prt 1.
There have been all sorts of things saying that USA wants Season 3 to end before the Olympics and that it was ending on 8/22...

So does this leave Prt 2 of Tipping Point for the Series Premiere of Season 4? Are they planning a Winter 6 in January? USA what are you doing to us!!

Guilty Pleasures

TheOakland Tribune ran an article on guilty pleasure. It lists movies and actors that people secretly enjoy, although everyone else says their funky.

CHINS UP, shoulders straight, free at last, a handful of readers have written in to cleanse themselves of the guilt associated with loving movies or stars generally reviled by the rest of humanity. As promised in last week's guilty-pleasures column, here are their confessions: "Revenge of the Nerds," writes Judy L. of Fremont. "I laugh like crazy. And anything with the young Patrick Dempsey (older is good, too), especially as The Woo Woo Kid (in "In the Mood"), where he keeps marrying older women, and 'Loverboy.' I never miss the opportunity to see him and his mop of brown hair doing his Fred Astaire dance to 'They Can't Take That Away From Me.' Oh, and let's not forget 'Weird Science.'" Dempsey's not in the latter, but a young Anthony Michael Hall and the underappreciated Kelly LeBrock, a true guilty pleasure, are. "Many years ago my husband and I went to the second-run movie theater to see something like 'Il Postino,'" writes Colleen K. "Somehow we watched 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective' instead. I sat through the opening credits thinking, 'wa happened?', not a little miffed. However, we both ended up guffawing through the whole unbelievably stupid movie. And saying every five minutes while laughing, 'This is sooooo stupid.' It's still stupid and it's still funny."

Fan Letter Urging Media Life To Lay Off Trash Talking The Dead Zone!

Please, ease up on USA's 'The Dead Zone'

July 21, 2004

Dear Editor:
I don't often write letters to web sites, but you've pushed me over the edge with your consistently negative comments about USA's "The Dead Zone."
In today's issue of Media Life, on the very same page you use words like "free fall" and "flame out" in reference to the "Dead Zone," your rankings indicate it was the 11th ranked cable show against households, and 7th against Adults 25-54.
Maybe that's not headline news, but it's far from ratings disaster. Last year you ran a headline along the lines of "Dead Zone in Death Throes." I'm all for a good play on words, but clearly, you were wrong, as the show was renewed for a summer flight, and is now in its third season. Because of this kind of negative reporting, ad agency colleagues of mine who read your site think that the show is in the trash. That's just not true.
While it is true that the show struggled when USA ran it in Winter 2003, it does just fine in the summer. And by all other reports in the press, USA is pleased with its performance.
You may not be a fan, personally, of the show, and that's fine. (Obviously, I am.) But please, look at your own data before you give the impression to your readers that this show is in the same ratings-league as "Peacemakers." That's just bad journalism. It's hard enough to keep quality shows on the air without this kind of unwarranted bashing. I'm not asking for fluff pieces, just fair and accurate reporting.

Roberta Haber

you go Roberta! I hope they take your advice!

Fans Having Fun

It seems one fans love of the original "National Lampoon's Family Vacation" sparked a 600+ mile trip to Wally World, or what's known to the rest of the world as Six Flags Magic Mountain.
You can read the full story of one fan's adventure at The Salt Lake Tribune

My first discovery was that nobody at Six Flags had a sense of humor.
I would make a John Candy joke and the guards did not even crack a grin. My first ride was The Whipper Snapper, but the workers who loaded us on didn't seem to have ever heard of Walleyworld or the Griswolds.

What's more, Magic Mountain opened in 1971 and became a Six Flags park in 1979. The only rides left from the movie are the Revolution (Whipper Snapper), Colossus, Gold Rusher and Scrambler.

There is also a NLFV Trivia information at the same location

In the original movie ending that test audiences hated, the family went to Roy Walley's home and held his family hostage. Actor John Candy, as the guard at the "closed" Walleyworld, was a last-minute addition. Notice that at Walleyworld, Anthony Michael Hall, who played Rusty, is taller than Beverly D'Angelo, who played long-suffering mother Ellen. Hall grew 3 inches after the original photography was completed and was now taller than his "mom" when the new ending was shot.

Robert Iler

Aint' It Cool News has a great interview with AMH that gives many spoilers into episodes for this coming season. The article is an older one, so some of it's episodes have already past, but one bit of news we found interesting was this little tidbit

We have a very talented actor who plays A.J. on THE SOPRANOS, Robert Iler, and he's in the high school episode that we did, as is Judge Reinhold. Frank

It's a really good interview, if you want to remain spoiler free, I'd suggest book marking it to read after the seasons over.

Looking Glass ~ Could Be Considered Spoilerish!

From TV Guide

Devious brothers draw Johnny into a legal quagmire in a fiendishly clever story about a bizarre murder plot.
Can a psychic infringe upon a person's right to privacy? What if that person is planning a homicide? When a stranger touches his shoulder, he “sees” the man slit a woman's throat. Yet the vision didn't show the man had a twin, or that the siblings are law students seeking to publicly humiliate Johnny. With parallels to the film “Minority Report,” the episode confronts the issue of holding people accountable for crimes not yet committed.

DRAMA

Johnny Smith (Anthony Michael Hall) has visions of the future and the past, and he uses his powers to solve crimes. I yawned at the premise when this series premiered, but I'm glad I took another look last month when it started its third season.

A surprising plus is the show's provocative political consciousness. In the two-part season opener, slick Greg Stillson (Sean Patrick Flanery), an enemy of Johnny's, narrowly won a congressional seat by nefarious means that evoked the real-life election controversy of 2000. The July 4 episode focuses on a secret government intelligence program called Eyetrap, which will remind viewers of the Pentagon's much-criticized Total Information Awareness project. The writers go too far in suggesting that an unchecked Stillson could bring on Armageddon, but at least they're giving us some food for thought.

The psychic hero has a potential new romantic interest in Rebecca (Sarah Wynter from 24)--if only he can get his mind off Sarah (Nicole deBoer), his former fiancee and the mother of his young son. Unfortunately, the triangle of Johnny, Sarah and her sheriff husband, Walt (Chris Bruno), is still too polite to believe.

E Insiders Has Interview with Anthony Michael Hall

AMH: [Laughter] What is interesting about the show is that I feel that a lot of the serialized episodes are my favorite because as an actor going through what I deem this to be leading man school, which is the starring in your own show, and working with all these talented people day in an day out, it is an opportunity to do different types of shows. Although I favor the serialized shows because it lets me really step up to the plate and take a stand and be a protagonist and the whole thing. And we do other things like this episode "Precipitate" where I play six or seven different characters and then we did "Deja Voodoo" which had a more romantic flare to it. We can take a risk, so that we don't always do a sort of cardboard cutout rendition of what the show is and what people expect it to be. And that is exciting too because the show is evolving.

We're Back!

I had to take a break, because real life had gotten in the way of my free time to work on the site.

Hope you can forgive me and that Visions of Johnny sister site Dead Zone TV kept everyone up todate on their news and info.

The Original Dana Is Back?

"No Questions Asked" was helmed by Mike Rohl (last season's "Cabin Pressure") and scribed by DZ newby Moira Kirland. I must say that the rookie more than holds her own when it comes to the DZ standard. And as if I hadn't already given you all your share of behind-the-scenes info already, check out who's appearing in "No Questions Asked": Kendal Cross (who, as you DZ Season One DVD fans will know, was the original Dana Bright) is back, and although her girl next-door looks may not have been what the network was looking for with Dana, they more than fit the bill in this episode! Enjoy

Cable Soaring in Summer

Posts Highest-Ever June Ratings, While Broadcast Networks' Share Has Continued to Shrink

By James Hibberd

Maine vampires, San Diego reality exhibitionists and Miami plastic surgeons are helping to create the best summer ever for advertiser-supported cable television.

"This isn't just dominant but super-dominant," said Steve Raddock of the Cable Advertising Bureau. "This is the highest-ever share in June for cable, the lowest-ever for broadcast, and the gap between them has never been greater. These are record-breaking numbers."

All told, June's cable prime-time share is up 7.4 percent, going from a 53.7 share in 2003 to 57.7 in 2004.

"It's a cable renaissance. You have all of these mainstream cable channels doing awfully well," said Julie Piepenkotter, ABC Family's senior VP of research.

In addition to the usual basic cable roster of wrestling, basketball and children's programming, ratings standouts include TNT's original miniseries "Salem's Lot," FX's "Nip/Tuck," Discovery's "American Chopper," USA's "Monk," and MTV's "Pimp My Ride" and "The Real World."

THE DEAD ZONE: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON

SUPPORTED BY NATIONAL TELEVISION AND PRINT ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN

Street Date to Coincide with Season 3 Premiere of the Hit Series
Starring Anthony Michael Hall

SANTA MONICA, CA (May XX, 2004)— Lions Gate Home Entertainment, a division of Lions Gate Entertainment (AMEX and TSX: LGF), will release the entire second season of USA Network’s critically acclaimed drama The Dead Zone on June 8. Based on characters from the Stephen King novel, the series, produced by Lions Gate Television and Paramount International Television, stars Anthony Michael Hall (61*, The Pirates of Silicon Valley, Sixteen Candles) as Johnny Smith, a man injured in a near-fatal car crash who emerges from a six-year coma with startling psychic abilities that allow him to see into the past and future through visions triggered by touch.

Created for television by acclaimed writer-executive producer Michael Piller (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager) and his son, producer Shawn Piller, The Dead Zone has been hailed by TV Guide as "fiendishly clever," by the New York Daily News as "eerily enjoyable" and by Star magazine as "the most intense sci-fi series since The X-Files." Praised by Entertainment Weekly for "his haunting performance," Anthony Michael Hall heads an outstanding ensemble cast that includes Nicole deBoer (Cube, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) who was recently named by SCI FI magazine as "one of the sexiest women in sci-fi," Chris Bruno (Another World), John L. Adams (Pacific Blue) and three-time Emmy nominee David Ogden Stiers (Curse of the Jade Scorpion).

Presented in widescreen format, the digitally mastered 5-disc DVD set The Dead Zone Season 2 features 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound and includes all 19 episodes, totaling 822 minutes of programming. With a street date timed to coincide with The Dead Zone’s third season premiere, this collectors set also contains an abundance of special features, including "The Making of an Episode," interviews and audio commentary by Anthony Michael Hall and multiple episode director Michael Robison, commentary from such special guest stars as Louis Gossett, Jr. (Iron Eagle) and Reiko Aylesworth (24), as well as deleted scenes and story boards. The DVD set has a suggested retail price of $49.98. The title has a pre-book date of May 18.
"The loyalty and fervor shown by the incredible fan base for this series forced us to go above and beyond on this DVD set," says Steve Beeks, President, Lions Gate Entertainment, Inc. "Not only is the value incredible with five DVDs packaged together, but the fans will be thrilled with the extensive list of extra features. This is a very clever series and we hope to excite current fans while attracting new ones with this collection."

CONSUMER ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN
Lions Gate Home Entertainment will support the release of The Dead Zone Season 2 with a comprehensive, targeted consumer advertising campaign, highlighted by television spots during the premiere of the third season on June 6, plus tags on all Season 3 episodes, and tagged ads on USA Network’s print media campaign. In addition, Lions Gate will offer consumers a $10 mail-in rebate with the purchase of The Dead Zone Season 1 and Season 2 sets.
THE DEAD ZONE – SEASON 2 SYNOPSIS
The Dead Zone is a unique psychological thriller combining action, romance and the paranormal with a continuing quest for justice. Johnny Smith (Hall) had a nearly perfect life…until the day it was interrupted by a near-fatal car crash that left him in a deep coma. Now, more than six years later, Johnny has awakened to a world in which he has lost everything that mattered to him most. But Johnny himself is also not the same person he once was: he is now in possession of amazing extrasensory powers that allow him to see into the past and the future through startlingly vivid visions triggered by touch. These powers have been activated by Johnny’s trauma in the so-called "dead zone" of the normal human brain. Unable to ignore his visions, especially when others are at risk, he is pulled between an ordinary and extraordinary life as he struggles to come to terms with his gift and the enormous responsibilities and public attention that come with it.

The series is produced by Lions Gate Television and Paramount International Television in association with Piller² and The Segan Company. Michael Piller, Lloyd Segan (The Bachelor, Boondock Saints, Bones) and Karl Schaefer (Strange Luck, Eerie, Indiana) are executive producers.

John L. Adams a Director?

Latest Riff

I learned a lot from TDZ editors, director Shawn Piller (who directed his first DZ episode this season), Michael Robison, and Executive Producer Lloyd Segan. All this learning and preparation for a chance to kinda, maybe, sorta, hopefully, one day, direct an episode of TDZ. Glasses in the air? Then let's toast to me directing!
