DEAD ZONE NOMINATED FOR MORE AWARDS!

NICOLE DEBOER
Sarah Bannerman in DEAD ZONE & Ezri Dax in Star Trek DS9

Nicole DeBoer began her acting career while a child in her native Toronto. Initially a shy child, she surprised her parents one day when she informed them that she'd been selected to play Dorothy in her fourth grade class' presentation of The Wizard of Oz. With the blessing of her parents, her grandmother helped her to find an agent. Shortly afterward, deBoer made her television debut in a Christmas special starring Red Skelton and Vincent Price. Throughout childhood she was active in commercials and theater.

Nicole deBoer stars as "Sarah Bannerman," Johnny’s former fiancée, in The Dead Zone.

During her teen years, she went through a "punk rocker" phase but found out that her "look" kept her from attaining good roles. By age seventeen, deBoer was back in front of the camera as a series regular in the CBC drama 9B. Later, she was a regular on Beyond Reality, which aired on USA Network, First Resort, and Catwalk, in the role of Maggi/Mickey, which also starred her Deepwater Black castmate Kelli Taylor and was telecast on MTV.

DeBoer's numerous television credits include guest appearances on the shows, Kids in the Hall, Poltergeist, The Outer Limits, Psi-Factor, Maniac Mansion and an episode of Tekwar entitled Chill Factor, which also featured Julie Khaner (Gen on Deepwater Black).

On film, deBoer was featured in Kids in the Hall-The Movie. She remarks, "I had done a few episodes with them as this character Laura and I get recognized more for that than just about anything else I've done!" When the movie materialized, she says she was thrilled to be a part of it. She also co-starred in the film National Lampoon's Senior Trip with Matt Frewer and Tommy Chong.

In her free time, deBoer likes to travel. She has been known to drive to Los Angeles from Toronto when the mood hits her.

NEW KING ARTICLE
SMH.COM tells us The Horrible Truth About Stephen King

Starting out with tales of telekinetic teens (Carrie), rabid St Bernards (Cujo) and towns overrun by vampires (Salem's Lot), King may have moved closer to mainstream respectability over time, but there's still a knee-jerk elitism at work excluding him from serious "literary" consideration. This is absurd: if he's good enough for Stanley Kubrick and David Cronenberg, he should be good enough for just about anyone. At least five King films (Kubrick's The Shining, Cronenberg's The Dead Zone, Carrie, Misery, and The Shawshank Redemption) are nothing short of contemporary classics; many of the others are way above average in terms of genre fare.

What makes King a mainstay on our cinema screens isn't necessarily the same thing that keeps him on top of the book charts. His best novels don't always make the best movies; conversely, The Shining and Brian DePalma's Carrie both manage to improve on their source material.

ROBERT DUNCAN MCNEIL TO WORK ON DEAD ZONE.

What about your other "dead" directing assignment - your upcoming stint on The Dead Zone?

The producer of The Dead Zone, Lloyd Segan, had talked to me about coming into their next order of shows. When we met a few months ago, he made a verbal offer of a show, but as it turns out, they got a very small order for the summer, only six episodes. They had prior obligations to some of their regular directors, so they've asked me to wait until the next episode pickup to direct the show.

I'm really looking forward to doing The Dead Zone - I've always thought Michael Piller was very very talented, and I'm happy for his success. And he always gave me tickets to the Braves games when they were in L.A.! He's a great guy.

TOP EP SO FAR THIS SEASON
According to my poll (that only allows me 10 choices)

Percipitate is your favorite episode to date.

Johnny/Sara is your favorite ship

Johnny is your favorite character

You can't just pick one favorite thing about the show,(but Johnny is a close second)

You like the news and information on the site the best

And most of you would watch The Hunt Episode anyway

SEASON 2 ENDS IN UK AND IRELAND
April 28th marks the end of the second season in the UK and Ireland. As far as I know, neither country has seen The Hunt.
As reported by the webmaster at dead zone tv.com

REAL CANCUN HAS IT'S ON FARMER TED
The Miami Herald gives a review of The Real Cancun and compares one of it's characters to Anthony Michael Hall's Farmer Ted on Sixteen Candles.

The Real Cancun, which was filmed only a month ago and rushed to theaters to beat a similar project at another studio, does have one great story arc: Alan Taylor, a shy, endearingly nerdy 18-year-old from Texas who has never drunk so much as a drop of alcohol (''Like, ever?'' one of his disbelieving roomies asks) and is equally inexperienced with the opposite sex, although girls are the only things he can think about (''I just want to see some boobies!'' he declares).
Alan's transformation from reserved wallflower to voracious party animal is the most engrossing element of The Real Cancun: He's like a real-life version of Anthony Michael Hall from Sixteen Candles, complete with his own fairy-tale ending

PILOT MOVIE DVD STILL GETS GREAT REVIEWS
DVD Talk.com gives a great review on the Wheel of Fortune/What it Seems DVD
Since the film is actually the first two episodes of the series, there really no wrap-up or conclusion to anything other than the serial killer plot that was introduced. No real questions are answered and it leaves the viewer wanting more. Hopefully a full season box set will follow.

There are many things to like about the show. Anthony Michael Hall (of Sixteen Candles and Weird Science fame) does an amazing job as Johnny Smith. As it’s written in the series, it’s a role many actors would love to have as it let’s Hall act out any of numerous roles as he’s experiencing something through another’s eyes.

Likewise, the show is never boring and it uses the idea of Johnny’s power to the fullest. Rather than a simple vocal explanation or visual flashback, striking visual effects and camera angels are used to present the rush of a vision as they come flooding into Johnny.

LLOYD SEGAN TALKS TO VIDEOGRAPHY.COM

For many viewers, this is what makes great television. Yet "Dead Zone" co-executive producer Lloyd Segan says the story behind the effects is the most important element of the program. "'The Dead Zone' is a drama," he said. "It's about people, it has heart, it has a soul. It's about a person whom we can all relate to because we might be presented with an extraordinary situation, and we would wonder how we would handle it. Each episode has pathos, humor, and mystery, and that combination is characteristic of the show."

The physical production of "The Dead Zone" starts with a seven-day prep period. Shooting also takes about seven days. According to Segan, there is also an additional extra unit day to pick up any elements that may have been missed

Currently, "The Dead Zone" is in the middle of its second season. Given its success, it's a safe bet there will be many more installments of the evolving tale of Johnny Smith and his psychic powers. Segan certainly has an eye toward the future. For one thing, he may consider a switch from 35mm film to an HD format. Although he says there are no plans to shoot in HD in the immediate future, "it is certainly a possibility as the technology gets better and better."

It's a great read! Check out the full article

KING CHECKS IN HOSPITAL
The prolific scribe is putting his macabre mind to the health-care system, having penned a 15-hour miniseries for ABC titled Kingdom Hospital. It's a series focusing on "shocking and frightening tales" taking place inside a hospital that has been built on an ancient graveyard--Patch Adams this ain't.

Now, after King has dotted every "i" and crossed every "t," ABC has given the project a greenlight with casting scheduled to begin next month. The show, based on Danish director Lars von Trier TV soap series The Kingdom, will kick off January 2004 with a two-hour season premiere, followed by 13 one-hour episodes.

However, more often than not, his work is adapted by other screenwriters with mixed results. USA Network's The Dead Zone, good; NBC's Carrie remake, bad. Maybe that's why the scribe has thrown his energies into his upcoming television projects--King has also claimed to be retiring from the writing gig, but that can be taken about as seriously as Cher or Babs announcing their farewell performances.

KINGS SHORTS ARE A MUST HAVE
"If your dog and cat are getting along better than you and your wife, you better expect to come home one night and find a Dear John note on your refrigerator door."

That is "L.T.'s Theory of Pets" from the book "Everything's Eventual" by Stephen King. The book is King's third collection of short stories, and is definitely a must-read.

According to King, the short story is an "almost" lost art. There used to be many markets for short stories, whereas now there are few, he states.

MORE NEWS ON DEBOER'S CUBE
Cube signature series (Lions Gate DVD, R, 91 min.) Watching the film again, I was less impressed than during my first viewing; but "Cube" remains an intriguing attempt at a different kind of horror film. Strangers wake up isolated in a cube structure, made up of 17,573 rooms. Each room has six openings in the middle of each surface, but some of the adjacent rooms have deadly traps. Rennes (Wayne Robson) throws his boot into a room first to test for the traps - after all, he has escaped from seven prisons - but he ends up with acid in the face anyway. Also trapped are Leaven (Nicole DeBoer), Dr. Holloway (Nicky Guasagni), the autistic Kagan (Andrew Miller), Worth (David Hewlett), policeman Quentin (Maurice Dean Wint) and Alderson (Julian Richings, but he is killed off in the shocking opening). It turns out one of those trapped inside helped design the cube's outer shell.

This new version features a new audio commentary by director/co-writer Vincenzo Natali; a 3:20 interview with DeBoer; and three deleted scenes (about three minutes total). Carried over from the first DVD release are art drawings, production designs and storyboards for the mesh, spike and twist wire traps. The original release had French and Spanish subtitles; this one has only Spanish. Rating: film 3 stars; extras 2 1/2 stars

It's a great read and talks about this summers series as well as Karl Schaefer, the new head writer. If I remember right, his series Eerie, Indiana used to air on Sat. Mornings. I loved it and still remember the episode with the twins that the mom kept in Tupaware containers so they'd never grow up. lol ( Hoping I'm remembering the right show here.)
He also links to the screenplay for The Hunt, for those of use that can't wait to see it, at least we get to read it.

Plot Summary Ben Stiller and Jack Black star as Tim and Nick, best friends, neighbors and co- workers, whose equal footing is suddenly tripped up when one of Nick's harebrained get-rich-quick schemes actually succeeds: Vapoorizer, a spray that literally makes dog poop, or any other kind for that matter, evaporate into thin air -- to where exactly is anyone's guess. Tim, who had scoffed at Nick's idea and passed on an opportunity to get in on the deal, can only watch as Nick's fortune -- and Tim's own envy -- grow to equally outrageous proportions. NEWS FLASH

Former STAR TREK writer/producer Michael Piller announced today that he will step down as the head writer of his hit USA Network genre series THE DEAD ZONE, gradually turning over showrunner duties to Karl Schaefer as production ramps up on six new summer episodes May 5th. Schaefer created the series STRANGE LUCK and EERIE, INDIANA and is joined by a new creative consultant on the series Mike Cassutt, who has written on THE TWILIGHT ZONE, FARSCAPE, MAX HEADROOM and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Cassutt worked with Piller as a censor at CBS at the beginning of their careers. Piller will remain an executive producer and writer on the series, however.

KISS THE BRIDE GETS REVIEWED
Sean Patrick Flanery's flick gets a breif summary at Indiewire.com
On to the films: the opening-night selection was Vanessa Parise's "Kiss the Bride," rumored to be a kind of "My Big Fat Italian Wedding." It reminded me more of "Melrose Place," however. Amanda Detmer, about as blond and Anglo-Saxon as they come, stars as Danni, an Italian-American girl from Rhode Island who just wants to get married to her hunky fiancé (Johnathon Schaech) and have a normal family wedding. Unfortunately, her sisters are shallow and selfish and always trying to upstage her by showing off their new sports cars and taking off their shirts. Sister Niki (Brooke Langton) is a B grade television actress from L.A., Chrissy (Vanessa Parise) is an obnoxious businesswoman from New York. Toni (Monet Mazur) plays the punky rebel sister who is so bad-ass that she is dabbling in lesbianism with girlfriend Amy (played by Alyssa Milano) more-or-less just to shock her family. Sean Patrick Flanery, Talia Shire, and Burt Young (both "Rocky" alumni) and the older Italian-American family members seem like they could be from an entirely separate, tenable movie. If you decide to take "Kiss the Bride" seriously, you'll be disappointed. But if you accept that this is a shallow film about shallow people, to some extent, it's a brilliant satire of superficiality.

IGN.COM CELEBRATES VACATIONS 20TH ANNIVERSARY
Interview from IGN.Com
We just got off the phone interviewing writer/director Harold Ramis, and we had the chance to ask him about the upcoming special 20th Anniversary of National Lampoon's Vacation. Here's the news:

IGN: Warner's going to be doing a new edition of Vacation later this year, are you involved with that?

Harold Ramis: Oh yeah, I just did a narration for that.

IGN: So is it just going to have a commentary? Anything else? A behind-the-scenes...?

Harold Ramis: I don't know that we had any outtake material, but I know Chevy did a commentary with I think maybe Anthony Michael Hall and Dana Barron (the kids), and Beverly might have been there too. I couldn't get out of Chicago so I did mine alone. What was funny was getting to see movie again and remembering how much that was too.

There you have it. Look for our full interview with Harold Ramis shortly. And we'll have more on the 20th Anniversary Edition of Vacation soon.

DAVID OGDEN STEIRS LENDS VOICE ONCE AGAIN
I got the chance to see this Oscar winning Anime Movie over the weekend during it's re-release. I must say I enjoyed it and thought it had a really nice story to it. The release date for DVD/Video is 4/15.
I'm not sure who's voice Mr. Stiers does, but when I find out, I'll be sure to let you know.

Spirited Away (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) (PG, 2002) A 10-year-old girl must fend for herself as she tries to rescue her parents from a spirit dimension, fighting a grumpy sorceress who seeks to prevent her from returning to the human world. Writer-director Hayao Miyazaki ("Princess Mononoke") took home the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival for this animated film, the most successful movie in the history of Japanese cinema. John Lasseter ("Toy Story") supervised the dubbing of the film into English. Voices include Daveigh Chase, Suzanne Pleshette, Jason Marsden, Susan Egan, David Ogden Stiers, Lauren Holly, Michael Chiklis, John Ratzenberger and Tara Strong. A masterful piece of animation shows why Japan reveres Miyazaki as much as the United States reveres Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg. Available on tape and DVD. DVD includes documentaries about the making of the film and the original Japanese trailer. Rating based on some scary moments. 2 hours 5 minutes. (N)

SCI FI UK HAS ANTHONY MICHAEL HALL INTERVIEW
Talk of relaxation brings us round to what Hall does to chill when he's not trying to make the world a better and safer place in The Dead Zone. "On the weekend I don't do much." He grants, "On Saturday's in particular I just sit around and watch sport and eat and be a lazy bum. Saturday night I take my girlfriend out. We go to dinner or to the movies. On Sunday's it's more of the same thing. I go to church. I'm a Catholic so I go to Mass and we just walk the dog and kick back." With a nod toward some unforeseen circumstances emerging to cause havoc for his character in The Dead Zone, Hall grins, "It's going to be a busy year so I'm just enjoying the calm before the storm."

Remember the UK started season 2 after we did, so some of it we already know. It's still a good read for AMH fans. So check out SciFi UK for the full interview

MORE NEWS ON NEW SCIFI SHOWS
Many of the dramatic series under development have less of a science fiction feel but are every bit as quirky. Dreamworks Television's Dead Lawyers is a one-hour drama that sees deceased defense attorneys who have to redeem themselves by righting miscarriages of justice. The psychic-flavored mystery series (from the producers of The Dead Zone) The Divide teams a late night disk jockey, his dead twin sister and a female coroner using forensic science to fight crime. Whoopi Goldberg is one of the executive producers of Legion, about a man who sells his soul to save his daughter and finds himself instead battling the forces of darkness, trying to redeem himself. Stargate: Atlantis is a spinoff of SCI FI's Stargate series. And Painkiller Jane is based on a comic-book action hero of the same name

GANGS GOES TO USA
USA Network has acquired the basic cable rights to Miramax Films' "Gangs of New York." The Universal-owned cable channel will air the Oscar-nominated film as early as March 2006, following a September 2005 screening in the broadcast window. Miramax has not yet sold "Gangs" to a broadcast network. The purchase is USA's first made directly from Miramax, said to Jane Blaney, the network's senior vp program acquisitions. "I hope this is the beginning of a long relationship with them," referring to chief operating officer Rick Sands and vp television sales Gary Perchick, who negotiated the deal on behalf of Miramax.
