DEAD ZONE HELPS BRING REVENUE TO LION'S GATE

Television revenues of $59.4 million decreased by 16% from $70.7 million in fiscal 2002, primarily reflecting the delivery of fewer television movies. Principal revenue drivers included the critically-acclaimed drama THE DEAD ZONE, Lions Gate's video releases of THE DEAD ZONE pilot and television movie SUPERFIRE, and Termite Art's 71.5 hours of nonfiction programming supplied to nine different networks. Lions Gate Television continues to build its leadership position as an independent supplier of programming with seven summer episodes of the critically-acclaimed drama THE DEAD ZONE on USA Network, the July debut of another drama, 1-800-MISSING, on Lifetime, and the upcoming television movie LUCKY SEVEN on ABC Family.

AUSTRALIA WHISPERS OF NEW KING MOVIE
And if times have been tough in the latest six months, the short-term outlook is not much better. In recent weeks, the industry has been full of stories about big-budget US feature productions that may go ahead in the December quarter. Possible starters include a sequel to the highly successful Jim Carrey movie The Mask; a new Superman film for Warner Bros; Secret Garden, a Columbia TriStar adaptation of the Stephen King novel Secret Window, to star Johnny Depp; and Man-Thing, a big-budget production made in conjunction with Marvel comics.

Despite all the rumors and various expressions of confidence that at least one of these projects will come off, the fact is that the only big foreign production confirmed at the moment is the new Star Wars film. Shooting starts at Fox Studios in Sydney on June 30 and will run for three months.

MORE NEWS ON THE HUNT
CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- USA plans to air the "banned" episode of its original series "The Dead Zone" as part of the drama's extended season this summer. The episode, "The Hunt," involves Johnny Smith (Anthony Michael Hall) being recruited by a covert branch of the government to track down Osama bin Laden. The cable network originally pulled the installment earlier this year due to its sensitive subject matter. It is not clear if any cuts or edits will be made to the episode when it airs this summer (the exact date is still to be announced).
Thanks to Needful Things
If those in Argentina have gotten to see the episode yet, we'd love to know about it! ;-)

OBSERVATIONS FROM FELLOW FANS
Thanks to odocolonie for writing in the following special effects suggestion

To the f/x guys about 20 years ago a movie called 'Trancers' came out featuring James Colbourne as the bad guy. Well if you got hit with a trancer gun the effect immediately was very powerful and without "cgi" but I'll never forget that this effect made me feel like something out of the ordinary truly happened. This effect would fit the Johnny's character like a glove and the best part is by
now nearly no one is familiar with the effect.

Hope you don't mind my posting your idea.

REVIEW OF DEAD ZONE SEASON ONE DVD

I didn't really know what to expect with this show. Surprisingly, I don't know a single person that watches it, and I hadn't heard much about the show. I knew it was based on a Stephen King book, but I hadn't read it, or seen the 1983 movie starring Christopher Walken. I sat down to watch the first episode of the show before meeting some friends on a Friday night and I was completely sucked in. Nearly 5 hours later I had finished watching the first two discs and was about to start on the third when I realized it was almost 2 am; time for bed. The next day I quickly made it through the remaining episodes. Ron Lieberman (director) had some things to say in the writing featurette which I found quite true:

"...every moment you're watching it, I, as the film director, say to myself, "Am I hooked? Is it holding my interest? do I want to stay here? Am I waiting for the next moment?"
Yes Ron, I'm hooked!

TROY DUFFY DOCUMENTERY INFO

Duffy was always a cocky character and his overnight success as Hollywood's latest "hard-on" as he puts it makes him insufferable. Although surrounded by a loyal coterie of friends and relatives (his brother is in the band), Duffy's success goes right to his head. Mollycoddled by his William Morris agents, he moves into offices on the Paramount lot, starts meeting with actors - Norman Reedus, Patrick Swayze, Sean Patrick Flanery, Matthew Modine etc. - rants about his prolific talents and scoffs at established power-players like Jerry Bruckheimer and Keanu Reeves.

Most surprising for those who are not die-hard fans of the show (of which I am one) is the presence of a character named Scott Woodville (played by M*A*S*H* actor David Ogden Stiers) who was kind of a partner with Bosley (David Doyle), but was apparently dropped as a character once the weekly series began.

NEW RIFF FROM JL ADAMS
USA Network has the New Riff up!
John L. Adams answers some fans quetions.

First question (and the question I seem to get asked the most) is about my hair/dreds and how I feel seeing them go? Well, I couldn't have been happier. The reality is: I've wanted to cut my hair for the last two years. But I kept auditioning for roles where my "look" played a big part in my getting the role... including The Dead Zone. As a matter of fact, the producers asked everyone coming in auditioning for Bruce to use a Jamaican accent (han Jah know dat mi 'ave no problem wit dem sort a ting, mon). Cutting my hair came down to the difficulty of the upkeep of healthy dreadlocks and, if I may quote Mr. Snipes in White Men Can't Jump, "It's hard work looking this good."

There's plenty of spoilers for up coming shows as well as names for some guest stars! Remember if you don't want to know, don't read!

CABLE SERIES SHOOT FOR EMMYS
Executives at basic-cable networks say the campaigning is a result of having good shows that merit consideration.

''When you add it up -- Monk, The Dead Zone, The Shield, The Osbournes, Trading Spaces -- there's a real volume to what basic cable is doing,'' USA Network chief Doug Herzog says.

Still, the basic-cable best-series entries make up a small percentage of nomination candidates: eight out of 50 entries for comedy and 13 out of 57 for drama.

CRONENBERG'S SPIDER GETS AN AFRICAN RELEASE
In an article at Entertainment.iAfrica he makes mention of The Dead Zone

[Andrew Burden]
Don’t tempt me, I may hold you to that! Now you’ve written the vast majority of your films. How did it feel to have adapted someone else’s work. Did you find any similarities to your experiences on ‘The Dead Zone’?

[David Cronenberg]
It’s not really an issue. ‘The Dead Zone’ was my first movie adaptation. After that there was ‘M. Butterfly’ and ‘Naked Lunch’. Before ‘Dead Zone’ I was rigorous about writing my own movies. But even then I chose the writer on the film and contributed to the script from the director’s point of view. But I came to realise that it can be a very integrated way of working; to fuse your sensibilities with someone else’s.

Unless you’re connected to the material in a deep way it doesn’t matter.

USA NETWORKS GOT A NEW LOOK!
USA's New Look! Stop by and check it out.

ANTHONY MICHAEL HALL ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS
Once again Anthony Michael Hall takes time out of his busy schedule to answer some of the questions submitted by fans to the USA site.
Sample of some questions

Q: Hi. Love the show! I noticed it takes you a while to check these questions... I don't blame you. Can you tell me what a typical day for a celebrity such as you is like? And how do you find time to do this at all? Thanks... keep up the good work!
- George Miller, Imperial, PA

AMH: Forgive my tardiness. We're filming six new episodes for this summer and we work 12 to 14 hour days. A typical day for me is: wake up around 6am, get to the set by 7am, and work till 9 or 10pm. I do this five days a week. (Ed: Weekends sometimes consist of traveling to conventions, photo shoots, promo shoots, interviews, etc.) The upside is that I love the people I work with, we're producing a show we're proud of and love and it provides a great sense of satisfaction.

Q: Compliments first - as a long-term fan of Stephen King, I'm dead impressed with The Dead Zone. I like your characterization of J.S. - does or will Johnny ever experience other sensations, e.g. smell or taste, in his visions?
- Scobie Zendless, England

AMH: Yes, all of Johnny's senses are at work in visions (much like in a dream). Also, they vary from episode to episode; which is at once challenging and exciting. Thanks for your email, keep watching, and God save the Queen!

I'm glad to see the success of The Dead Zone spreading to so many other countries!

SEAN PATRICK FLANERY MOVIE TO WATCH FOR
All aboard the Con Express
06/06/2003 - 18:55:52

Con Express kicks off with FBI agent Alex Brooks (Sean Patrick Flanery) being interviewed for a new assignment by two of his bosses.

The burning question on their minds is what went wrong with his previous case, which, by now, we’ve gathered wasn’t exactly a roaring success.

According to Brooks, it all started with a tip-off, and he goes on to explain how he and his team uncovered a terrorist plot, masterminded by Anton Simeonov (Arnold Vosloo), a Russian general, to steal barrels of Sarin gas to sell to the highest bidder.

Brooks, ably assisted by Russian agent Natalya (Ursula Karven), captures the demented general.

But, Anton escapes, causing a plane crash, and heads for the train transporting the deadly cargo.

USA TO SPLIT MONK
By Brian Ford Sullivan

CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- USA announced today it plans to split the second season of its original series "Monk" between the summer and winter months. Nine of its 16 episodes produced for the upcoming season will begin airing Fridays at 10:00/9:00c starting June 20 with the remaining seven set to bow at midseason.

No reason for the split was given however with the network now carrying three original series ("The Dead Zone" and the upcoming "Peacemakers" are the others) the need to spread out its resources over the calendar year is the likely culprit. By the end of July, USA will be airing new episodes of the trio ("Dead Zone" on Sundays starting July 6 and "Peacemakers" on Wednesdays starting July 30) each week.

As for "Monk," look for several high-profile guest stars in the new season including Betty Buckley as Sharona's (Bitty Schram) mother, Glenne Headly ("ER," "Dick Tracy") as Lt. Stottlemeyer's (Ted Levine) wife and a yet-to-be-cast actor as Adrian's (Tony Shalhoub) brother. Production has also been moved from Toronto to Los Angeles as the series has seen an increased budget for the new season.

DEAD ZONE ALIVE FOR SEASON 2

The Dead Zone begins its summer run on USA Network for a second season that includes seven new episodes. The first show will air at 10 p.m. Sunday, July 6. Based on characters from the Stephen King novel, The Dead Zone is produced by Lions Gate Television and Paramount International Television in association with Piller(2) and The Segan Co.

DEAD ZONE AND MONK HELP BRING ADVERTISING DOLLARS TO USA

On the Sci Fi side we put on Taken, which averaged a 4.1 over ten nights--that's not cume, it's average, which is amazing from a network that when we sold the [2002] upfront and sold Taken, was doing a .6," Lucas said. "At USA, we put on Dead Zone, which was the highest premiere in basic cable ever, and we put on Monk, which was the highest-rated drama in its first season, higher than [FX's] The Shield, and was then repurposed by ABC. So we fulfilled our promise, we put on quality programming. People took a gamble, they went with us, they had a good year and we had a great year. Now this upfront's here and we're selling what we put on the air last year and what we're putting more on the air of this year, which is quality, original programming."

TV GUIDE MENTIONS 7 EPS

Hmm will we solve the mystery of the seventh episode lol

Thanks to Linda for the scan and info.

SEASON ONE DVD RELEASE
Don't forget season one will be released on June 17!

SEAN PATRICK FLANERY GOES POOL SIDE
What better way to celebrate summer's onset in Hollywood than to wear a bathrobe to a party?

That's what Ethan Embry did at the Mondrian Hotel's Skybar last week, and not because he was emulating Hugh Hefner.

A "pal" - probably jealous of the hunky star of ABC's "Dragnet" - shoved Embry into the pool.

So Embry simply ditched the wet stuff, donned the some terrycloth, and wore it for the rest of the night as he hung out with Rachel Leigh Cook, Shannon Elizabeth, Jessica Biel, Jason Biggs, James Marsden and Sean Patrick Flanery.

The young actors were spotted tossing around a Catchphrase toy - a sort of electronic hot potato one doesn't want to get caught holding when it buzzes.

No doubt one could get tossed in the pool that way.

VACATION COMES TO TV
According to Zap2it.com, Randy Quaid will be reprising his role from Vacation for NBC

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Production began Friday (May 30) on NBC's upcoming holiday movie "National Lampoon's Cousin Eddie's Christmas Vacation." Not just a "National Lampoon" movie in name only, several cast members from the 1983 classic "National Lampoon's Vacation" return, along with veteran actors Fred Willard and Ed Asner.

While neither Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, nor Anthony Michael Hall will return as the Griswolds, Dana Barron, who played daughter Audrey in the original "Vacation" will be back, along with Randy Quaid's Cousin Eddie and Miriam Flynn's Catherine. However, Eddie and Catherine's slutty daughter Vicki (played by "Ally McBeal's" Jane Krakowski in '83) will not be present.

Eric Idle will also stop by to make a cameo appearance as the put-upon English tourist he played in the 1985 sequel "European Vacation."

"Cousin Eddie's Christmas Vacation" was written by Matty Simmons, who produced the other "Vacation" movies, as well as "Animal House," and is being directed by Nick Marck ("Malcolm in the Middle," "Gilmore Girls").

SEVEN EPISODES ALSO MENTION IN USA TODAY
USA Today also mentions seven episodes in their run down of things to watch this summer

The Dead Zone (USA, Sundays, July 6): Anthony Michael Hall stars as the psychic-powered protagonist of this series inspired by Stephen King's novel, returning for a seven-episode second season

*crosses fingers in hopes it's the missing Hunt episode*

SEXY SUMMER SIX GETS MENTION AUSTIN
The Austin Statesman mentions The Dead Zone and Monk in their line up of what to watch to keep cool on those hot Texas summer nights.

USA: "Monk" (new episodes), 9 p.m. June 20. The obsessive-compulsive detective, played by Tony Shalhoub, returns to wacky crime-solving.

"Dead Zone" (new episodes), 9 p.m. July 6. Seven new episodes of the drama, based on a Stephen King novel, returns with Anthony Michael Hall as the hero with psychic powers.

Although they are saying there is 7 new episode, I've only heard mention of 6 in the last Riff.
