RINGWALD SITS WITH LOVE

All of it was strange, but among the strangest occurrences was the interview with Molly Ringwald, who, for some inexplicable reason, agreed to sit on a couch with Love.

Ringwald, who these days is making people sit up and pay attention to her work on Broadway in Cabaret, tried to bear up under Courtney's meanderings, chief among them being that she emulated Ringwald during her performance in Trapped: "All that was much more you than me," said Courtney.

MARATHON CANCELED?!
After reviewing USA's Schedule page, it appears that along with The Hunt For Osama, our promised 13 hour Marathon leading up to the Finale has also been axed.

WRITERS GET CALLED ON INDIAN CASINOS
Indian Country, The Nation's Leading American Indian News Source, runs an article on how Indian Casinos are portrayed in movies and T.V. See there thoughts on the episode, Dead Men Tell Tales

Speaking of money laundering and mobsters, there’s been another sighting of organized crime at Indian casinos. It’s shown up not only on "The Sopranos" on HBO but now on USA Network’s "The Dead Zone." The March 16 episode of the psychic thriller, loosely based on the Stephen King novel, revolves around supposed mafia financing of a fictitious Initiative 151 in Maine to authorize tribal casinos. (Since the episode was written and filmed, a very real casino initiative has qualified for the Maine ballot this November, but it doesn’t have that designation.)

In the alternative Maine of "The Dead Zone," psychic Johnnie Smith, played by Anthony Michael Hall, has to figure out a gangland killing. His trail takes him to the fictitious Hollow Horn Resort Casino owned by the Mahopiac tribe in the un-fictitious Berkshire town of Stockbridge, Mass. (once home to the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohicans.) To gain access to the casino manager Jonas, an Indian stereotype with roach and ponytail played by Steven Cree Molison, Smith uses his psychic powers to throw hard eights at the craps table and gets himself banned. Gangsters, meanwhile, swarm the place, just as Tony Soprano and his crew get VIP treatment at the Mohonk casino in eastern Connecticut.

This is fiction, of course. The Mohonk and Mahopiac tribes, from the viewpoint of the TV writers, are conveniently extinct, and Stockbridge is probably the last place in Massachusetts that would accept a casino, if and when the state allows one. Likewise, the sighting of a known mobster at a real casino, Indian or otherwise, would trigger major repercussions. The writers at the "Sopranos" and "The Dead Zone" don’t seem to realize that casinos keep watch lists of undesirables who can’t even go in their parking lots. (We recall that the Mohegan Sun once threw out an actor in another HBO series.)

Thanks to Lynda for the news and also for pointing out that in the article, "There's at least one misstatement in that the name of the tribe that runs the DZ casino is called the Menanaki, not the Mahopiac" she also comments From their website: "Indian Country Today publishes more original journalistic content on American Indian issues - written by a sizeable full time staff of American Indian and non-native reporters with extensive experience in Native communities - than any other news source

SCIFI TREMORS

S.S. Wilson, co-writer and co-producer of the upcoming SCI FI Channel original show Tremors: The Series, told SCI FI Wire that the show offered him the chance to develop ideas left out of the film series on which it is based. "We're able to do a lot of ideas that never made it into the movies, because the movies always started out bigger than their budgets," Wilson said in an interview. "We cut many things from the movies, so there are literally ideas in the first few episodes of the series that were in the scripts for Tremors 2 and 3, but never made it into those movies for budgetary reasons."

Wilson, who co-wrote and co-produced the original Tremors film in 1990, added that a series allows for the deepening of the franchise's characters. "That's what drives television anyway," he said. "You come back every week to see what's going on with people you invite into your home." But, he added, "we have had to increase the strangeness factor of our little valley, Perfection Valley, in order to provide a broader pallet of creatures. That will start unfolding in the first six episodes."

Tremors: The Series, starring Michael Gross as Burt Gummer, premieres with two back-to-back hourlong episodes, starting at 9 p.m. ET/PT March 28.

FOX BELIEVES IN AFTERLIFE
For fans of all things psychic/supernatural, looks like Fox may have a show that's right up or ally

Fox has ordered the pilot presentation The Afterlife, a digitally animated project about a family that dies in a freak photography accident and winds up in purgatory, which looks a lot like suburban Los Angeles, Variety reported. Barry Bostwick (Spin City) has been tapped to lend the voice for father Stan, while Kerri Kenney (The Ellen Show) will voice the neurotic family matriarch, Flo, the trade paper reported.

Also attached are Alexandra Holden (Ally McBeal) and Danny Strong (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), who will voice the children.

Threshold Entertainment's Larry Kasanoff will executive produce the project for his Threshold Digital Research Labs, which is also behind the upcoming full-length computer-animated feature film Foodfight, the trade paper reported. He also created the project, along with Joshua Wexler and writers David Schneiderman and Derek Guiley.

DARABONT DEVELOPING MIST

Writer and director Frank Darabont told SCI FI Wire that he will work on an adaptation of Stephen King's novella "The Mist" after he finishes scripts for the upcoming fourth Indiana Jones movie and for Fahrenheit 451, based on Ray Bradbury's classic SF novel. Darabont's relationship with King—stemming from his work directing the King film adaptations The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile—helped him gain King's blessing for the project, he said.

"He's always given me a very free hand [with his stories], which is really lovely," Darabont said in an interview. "Based on how it's gone before, I write the script, I [send] it to him, he reads it, and he says, 'Great, good luck.' And off I go. We've become really good pals. He's a great guy."

Darabont said that he is still at work on Indy IV and that Fahrenheit will take another three months to write after Indy is finished. He plans to direct Fahrenheit as well, but hopes to write Mist before the end of 2003.

LIST OF KINGS BOOKS TO FILM
Miami Herald offers a list of King's books gone Hollywood.

NOT SO GOOD REVIEW FOR DREAMCATCHER
The boyhood chums united against monstrous evil recalls "It," with the psychic powers of "The Dead Zone" and the chummy sentimentality of "Stand by Me" thrown in for good measure. There is a little American Indian mysticism, as in "Cujo" (a dreamcatcher is an Indian ritual object much prized by New Age tourists) and some troubled animals.

Spoilers for the movie are a plenty so don't read if you don't want to know

MORE MENTION OF THE DEAD ZONE AMONG FAVORITES

One of the world’s best-selling novelists, King has written more than 40 books, including short-story collections and novels by his alter-ego, Richard Bachman. His macabre tales of possessed cars, telekinetic teens and other such figments of a lurid imagination have racked up combined sales of more than 225 million copies.

Attack of the Movie Adaptations speaks of Kings new movie Dreamcatcher. It also mentions past favorites of which The Dead Zone makes another list.

7 GREAT KINGS
Kansas City.com has a listing of their favorite Stephen King Flicks.

www2.ocregister.com has an article talking about how King wrote Dreamcatcher as away to help him cope with the pain of an accident he had in 1999.
The article makes mention of his other work, including The Dead Zone

Bill has been my hero since I was at (the University of) Michigan and 'The French Connection' and 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' came out, and I realized that it was the writing that made those movies so incredible. And I knew I wanted to do that. And I had loved some of Stephen's novels, 'The Dead Zone' and 'The Shining' in particular, and I loved some of the movies made from them.

CHUBB SUES HALL

Anthony Michael Hall, who stars in the television series "The Dead Zone," is being sued for more than $900,000 (U.S. $612,000) by the show's insurer, which says he failed to disclose a mental illness.

In the negligent misrepresentation lawsuit, Chubb Insurance of Canada claims production of the series in Vancouver was disrupted when Hall was admitted to St. Paul's Hospital on May 11, 2001, following an episode of "bipolar affective disorder depression with psychotic features."

He was discharged from the hospital a day later and returned to his home in New York, according to documents filed last week in British Columbia Supreme Court.

UPCOMING WAR SHORTENS DEAD ZONE SEASON

Monday, March 17, 2003 - 1:39 PM
USA Pulls Osama 'Dead Zone' Episode
By Brian Ford Sullivan

CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- USA has pulled an upcoming episode of its original series "The Dead Zone" that heavily mentions terrorist-at-large Osama Bin Laden.

The episode, "The Hunt for Osama," features Johnny Smith (Anthony Michael Hall) being recruited by a little known branch of the C.I.A. to help track down America's most wanted fugitive: Osama Bin Laden. Co-written by Joseph McMoneagle (author of "The Stargate Chronicles: Memoirs of a Psychic Spy") the hour is based on the true history of the U.S. government's "remote viewing" or psychic espionage program. While officially disbanded in 1995, various sources believe it is continuing secretly or on a contract basis in order to assist in the war on terrorism.

USA was not available for comment on the schedule change.

Originally set to air March 30 at 10:00/9:00c, another new episode, "Playing God" (featuring fellow brat-packer Ally Sheedy) will air instead. A new air date for "The Hunt for Osama" has not been given. Because of the episode being yanked, the second season of "The Dead Zone" will conclude a week early, on April 6.

Thanks to Linda for the info!

SIGNATURE SHOWS SHINE ON SMALLER STATIONS
USA Today has an iteresting article on the ups and downs of having a signature show make a name for your station

Some popular basic-cable networks, which tend to be far less specialized, have done well without signature series by defining themselves in other ways. Lifetime was among the first with original hourlong dramas (The Division), but it's best known for women-in-peril TV movies. USA — despite kudos and reasonable ratings for the series Monk and The Dead Zone— is far more reliant on daily doses of JAG. TNT prefers ratings from NBA basketball, Law & Order reruns and movies over smaller returns from former series Bull and Witchblade.

MORE WALKEN NEWS

Walken, Close Mull Stepford

Oscar-nominated actor Christopher Walken (Catch Me If You Can) and Glenn Close are in talks to join the cast of Frank Oz's remake of The Stepford Wives, Variety reported. Paramount is also wooing country singer Faith Hill to play a role in the film, the trade paper reported.

Walken and Close are eyed to play the town leaders of Stepford. One of them might be behind the campaign to transform the dissident townsfolk into robotized perfect mates, the trade paper reported.

Nicole Kidman tops a cast that includes John and Joan Cusack and Roger Bart, the latter of whom plays a gay character with effeminate mannerisms who is transformed into a beer-guzzling soccer dad, the trade paper reported. Paul Rudnick wrote the script for the remake, which is eyed as a black comedic take on the original 1975 SF movie.

TONIGHT ON THE DEAD ZONE
The Man Who Never Was
60 min.
Robert Culp shines as an irascible neighbor whose sudden disappearance bemuses Johnny (Anthony Michael Hall) in a sly, well-crafted tale.
Culp, best known for co-starring with Bill Cosby in the I Spy series, plays Geoffrey Grissom, a reclusive loner who Johnny foresees will go missing. Curious, Johnny visits Grissom, who predicts the same thing. But their chat is cut short when Grissom's nurse orders Johnny to leave. When Johnny returns to renew the discussion the next day, he finds another family living in the house and no trace of Grissom. In fact, the psychic finds no evidence of Grissom even existing---until he has a vision that points to an elaborate deception at work.

OH WHAT A TANGLED WEB WE WEAVE..
More on Cronenberg's Spider

NEWSWEEK: The critics have been calling this your most subtle psychological movie to date, and the least dependent on effects. Does this reflect a new direction for you?
David Cronenberg: It’s cyclical. The same thing happened when I did “The Dead Zone.” Then “Dead Ringers,” then “M. Butterfly” as well. For me creatively it all feels like the same because I personally am not obsessed with special effects at all. I mean, it’s all artifice anyway, whether it’s the lighting or the costuming or the makeup. We are after all dressing up in funny clothes, pretending we’re someone else. There’s an element of play involved and even us hardened pros are very aware of that.

THE FILM FOLLOWS Dennis Cleg (Ralph Fiennes), nicknamed Spider by his mother for his fondness of webs, as he shuffles around his old stomping grounds, taking notes. While he struggles to reconstruct the details of a chilling murder that he may or may not have witnessed as a kid, memories of his mum become confused with those of a neighborhood harlot—both of whom are played by Miranda Richardson.

CONGRATS TO ANTHONY MICHAEL HALL!
For his nomination for Best TV Actor. at the Saturn Awards

THIS WEEKS RATINGS

Ratings from last Sunday are out, and they are good, in fact, the numbers are better than the week before.

Nielsen, week ending 3/2, Top 10 Ad-Supported Cable Shows

Adults 18-49
Rank 9, 1,834,000 viewers
Last week: 1,762,000 viewers

Adults 25-54
Rank 8, 1,913,000 viewers
Last week, 1,554,000 viewers (a 23% increase!)

DZ didn't make the top 10 this week in 18-34 viewers. But it's not the rank that's important, it's the number of viewers, and they're trending upward from last week.

Additionally, January household ratings (percent of all US households) averaged a 1.1, which means 1.1% of all US households watched DZ. A trade publication described that as "solid."

MORE NEWS ON DEAD ZONE AND USA
It's a huge win in awareness," says Jeff Lucas, president of sales for Universal Television Networks. "It catapults us to a new level. It's unbelievable what an award can do. When we walk into an agency and start to talk about Monk and Dead Zone, the first thing they usually bring up is how much they love Tony Shalhoub and then they'll bring up the award. And if they don't mention it, we mention it before leaving the room."

CHRISTOPHER WALKEN IN POOLHALL JUNKIES

Looks like Mr. Walken's been a busy guy this year.
Following the Christmas Day release of "Catch Me," he's already popped up in the hit kiddie comedy "Kangaroo Jack" and has a juicy part in the indie ensemble drama "Poolhall Junkies," which opened Friday. And, you'll find Walken in theaters later this year in the Ben Affleck-Jennifer Lopez mob movie "Gigli," the comedy "Envy" with Ben Stiller and Jack Black, a Welsh laugher about dueling funeral directors called "Plots With a View" and The Rock's latest action adventure, "Helldorado."

NEW RIFF FROM ADAMS
An echoed *sniff*, because it's the last Riff of the season
Allow me to wax sentimental for a few seconds and say that this past season has meant more to me than any year since I became an actor. I feel like I've grown so much in the past year, and you all have been a huge part of that. From your complements posted on the website bboard to meeting people from around the country, you've shown a brother love this season, and I truly appreciate that. So for everything, I want to say a heart-filled "Thank You!" (sniff sniff - this is where the tear drop stains would be if this were a letter).

Spoilers galore for Zion, don't read if you don't want to know.

MORE ON YAHOO/USA

NEW GOOFS AT TVTOME.
Misbegotten
Are we really supposed to believe that Rev. Purdy has never heard of The Blair Witch Project?
Walt and his pack of cops all drive over from Maine to New Hampshire where Johnny is being held - in such a situation they'd be out of their jurisdiction and would call the local New Hampshire cops.
Why doesn't anybody try the windows when they want to get out of their house? They don't appear to be boarded up, yet all anybody does is go over to the doors and see that they're boarded and give up.

YAHOO HELPS SELL GREAT TELEVISION
Yahoo.com is helping networks reach more viewers with their online advertising.
Since the start of the fall season, TV networks have been increasingly turning to online efforts to broadcast their message to young demos. Networks that have advertised their programming with Yahoo! include ABC, Comedy Central, HGTV, Fox (which recently touted the debut of the new "24" season in a co-branded promotion with Ford), UPN (which this season has touted the launches of "Haunted" and "Twilight Zone" and promoted "Buffy" for the November sweeps) and USA Network (which has promoted "Monk" and "Dead Zone").

DEAD ZONE AND MONK MAKE USA A SUCCESS
One of the top stories on Electronic Media Online talks about what makes a hit on cable.
How great shows, boost ratings and what ratings do for both the show and the stations/networks they air on.
Current cable hits include FX's "The Shield," MTV's "The Osbournes," USA's "Monk and "Dead Zone," E!'s "The Anna Nicole Show," Nickelodeon's "SpongeBob SquarePants" and the aforementioned "Trading Spaces." These are shows that are not only generating water cooler talk but also positively impacting their networks' bottom lines.

USA was a stronger No. 1 this past summer, thanks to "Monk" and "Dead Zone," said Jack Wakshlag, chief research officer with Turner Networks. USA grew 171,000 homes in the 18 to 49 demographic, and 74,000 of those homes are attributable to the new shows, he said. In 2001 USA's lead on No. 2 network TNT in adults 18 to 49 was only 5,000 last summer; this summer it was 100,000, he said.
