HBO Loosing Ground.

The Star Ledger, has an article on how HBO started cable series, but can't brag this year about how far ahead they are of the other cable networks.

The age of entitlement is over. The channel's less glamorous subscription cable rival, Showtime -- which has traditionally played Donovan to HBO's Bob Dylan -- has earned buzz with such series as "Queer as Folk," "The L Word," "Huff," "Barbershop" and "Weeds." Sci-Fi Channel's best miniseries ("Taken," "Dune," "Children of Dune") and series ("Farscape," "Battlestar Galactica") have earned it a rep for making genre fare that's worth taking seriously. FX stumbled with "Over There" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," but it scored big with "The Shield," "Nip/Tuck" and "Rescue Me," black comedies whose main characters tend to fall into one of two camps, redeemable and irredeemable brutes. TNT has "Closer" and "Wanted," USA has "Monk" and "The Dead Zone." And Comedy Central and Cartoon Network have established themselves as safe harbors for dangerous minds. (The latter's "Adult Swim" block of nighttime programming is as close to avant garde art as TV gets.)

It may be derided by some as a refuge for nerds, but the Sci-fi channel, which celebrates its 10th birthday this week, is a valuable asset for its owner, NBC Universal. In an era when multi-channel TV is growing rapidly around the world, brands with a universal appeal are commodities with huge growth potential. Sci-fi now operates in dozens of countries. In the UK, it is available in more than 9 million homes and reaches an average of 2.8 million viewers a week. The company says its audience is split almost equally between men and women, who tune in for shows such as The Dead Zone and Psychic Detectives.

Christmas Episode Spoliers!

From the Futon Crtic (there's Monk spoilers there as well.)

USA is hoping to cure the holiday blues of "Monk" and "The Dead Zone" fans as the network has scheduled a first-run, Christmas-themed episode of each series for Thanksgiving weekend.

DON'T READ ANY FURTHER DOWN IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW

And here's how they describe the "Dead Zone" episode, which is set to air Sunday, November 27 at 10:00/9:00c.

"When female psychic Alex Sinclair (returning guest star Jennifer Finnigan) pays Johnny a surprise Christmas visit, the two work together to solve the mystery of one very lost and confused Santa. Sharing disturbing and contradictory visions of their Santa’s life, Alex and Johnny wonder who this strange old man in a track suit and Santa hat really is. As their investigation unfolds, they become involved with three young street kids who are equally lost, and who wind up joining everyone back at Johnny’s for the best - albeit strangest - Christmas any of them can remember. Don't miss "A Very Dead Zone Christmas," an all new episode of The Dead Zone, premiering Sunday, November 27 at 10/9C!"

David Ogden Steirs Lends His Voice Again!

From Box Office Prophets
David Ogden Steirs will be lending his voice to Hoodwinked!: The True Story of Red Riding Hood
Release Date: December 25, 2005

As Gregory Maguire has taught us in books like Wicked and Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, there's always at least two sides to every story. The grand tradition of taking classic fairy tales and turning them upside down continues with this CGI animated film. The creators of the story, Cory Edwards, Todd Edwards and Tony Leach, have fashioned the tale in the same fashion as Rashomon.

In Hoodwinked, the story begins at the end. Various furry and feathered cops from the animal world are charged with the task of investigating a domestic disturbance at Granny's college. The parties involved are a girl, a wolf and an axe, and the potential charges that might stem from the incident include breaking and entering, disturbing the peace, intent to eat, and wielding an axe without a license. Even worse, this strange case might be connected to another one they've been investigating - a certain "Goody Bandit" has been stealing recipes from shops across the land, but has been impossible to capture.

Investigator Nicky Flippers is the guy who will hear all four sides of the events that have taken place. He'll question a karate-kicking Red, a thrill-seeking Granny, a sarcastic and back-talking Wolf and a doofy Woodsman. As he hears the various stories, certain threads from previous tales will be tied up.

Co-director Cory Edwards has created the film with an eye to the old Bugs Bunny cartoons, making the film move at a super fast pace. While kids will enjoy the animals, he plans to make it funny for all ages, with in-jokes that might only really be understood by the older viewer. The cast is stellar, including veteran voice actress Tara Strong as Red, Patrick Warburton (The Emperor's New Groove) as Wolf, Sally Struthers as Granny, David Ogden Stiers (Lilo & Stitch) as Nicky Flippers and Andy Dick as Boingo. The concept was certainly good enough for the Weinsteins, who made the film one of the earliest acquisitions of their new distribution venture. The film will be released over the Christmas holidays in 2005. (Kim Hollis/BOP)

The Brat Pack Movie and Music Collection Coming To DVD

From Bellaonline.com

The Brat Pack Movie and Music Collection arrives on DVD on November 1st. This set includes the movies Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, , and Weird Science. Now you may be scratching your head and thinking that this set sounds a lot like the High School Reunion Collection which was released in 2003. This set features the same movies but also includes a cool music CD with music from the three films. The track list for the songs on the music CD has not been released.

Re-naming and repackaging this set was probably a good idea considering these films were widely referred to as "Brat Pack Movies." It still seems a bit odd that Weird Science is here and not Pretty and Pink, so in many ways this is the Anthony Michael Hall collection since he appears in all three films.

The Brat Pack Movie and Music Collection arrives in stores on November 1st.

Jennifer Finnigan

Jennifer Finnigan talks about life and her new series with The Boston Herald

Finnigan has been doing her own juggling act lately. In addition to headlining her own drama, she's planning a wedding with her fiance, actor Jonathan Silverman

She hasn't had much interaction with the show's executive producer, Jerry Bruckheimer. The man behind ``Without a Trace,'' ``Cold Case'' and ``The Amazing Race'' is busy filming the sequels to ``Pirates of the Carribean.''

``He did come on set once during the making of the pilot. It was so funny because, as usual, the set was loud. Everyone was talking at the same time, and then all of the sudden everyone started speaking in hushed tones. So out loud I was like, `What's going on? Why is everyone so quiet?' And I turned around, and it was like God had appeared.' ''

I thought it was cool that The Dead Zone gets a nod in a sports right up for the Falcons!

"We're all questionable," Mora said this week. "We might be here tomorrow, we might not. I might die in 30 seconds, I might not."

Maybe Mora knows things we don't, sort of like the creepy Anthony Michael Hall character in the TV program "The Dead Zone" who can predict your future by simply touching your hand. Maybe, in handing Vick his playbook earlier this week, Mora had a premonition of his quarterback falling through an open manhole while attempting to cross the street.

Dead Zone On Channel A

It seems Channel A in Canada did a last minute schedule switch the left Smallville Fans scratching their heads.

It appears that a lot of viewers are wondering what happened to the season 5 of Smallville on A-Channel. After premiering the show on october 1st, the show didn't air as scheduled on saturday.

Most fans of the series sat down saturday @ 7pm on A-Channel only to find out that The Dead Zone was airing in it's place.

It seems that an on-air scoller mentionned that Smallville would air on monday but a lot of people seemd to have missed it as we've received quite a few e-mails concerning this.

So after checking with their advanced listings that we receive for our "Primetime Tonight" feature on the main page (that is currently unavailable but will return in november), we discovered that for the next three weeks (at least), Smallville will air Mondays @ 9pm (local time) because Just Legal, who previously aired on this timeslot has been canceled late last week by The WB.

Filling the empty timeslot left by the move of Smallville on all A-Channels (except A-Channel Victoria/Vancouver), Access Hollywood - Week-end edition will move ahead to 7pm to make room for The Dead Zone @ 5pm.

For A-Channel Victoria/Vancouver which previously aired Smallville sundays @ 6pm, The Dead Zone will air in it's place. The Week-end edition of Access Hollywood doens't air on the Victoria station.

This change for Smallville is effective until further notice for all A-Channels.

Here's the episodes that will air over the next followig weeks:
Monday Oct. 10th @ 9pm – Episode: Mortal
Monday Oct. 17th @ 8pm – Episode: Hidden
Monday Oct. 24th @ 9pm – Episode: Aqua

You can also catch Smallville on Space, sundays @ 7pm

Cronenberg's 'A History of Violence' Gets Good Reviews

Go to Toledoblade.com to read the interview.

A History of Violence has a movie star (Viggo Mortensen), the largest big budget he's ever known ($30 million or so), and a story that doesn't ooze, spurt, or slather on the blood or any bodily fluids. It tells of a small town guy, Tom Stall (Mortensen), who kills two men to save the people in his diner. And then it goes beyond that act to look at what it means to his family, and how a few seconds of violence reverberates in ever more violent ways. If it appears to be Cronenberg's most conventional picture to date, look again: He has always been on the short list of major directors who use violence not for effect but formeaning. We spoke last month during the Toronto International Film Festival. The following is an edited version of that long chat.

USA to Top TNT!

From Variety

The big question for USA is whether the push it gets in the fourth quarter carries over into next year. Bonnie Hammer, president of USA and the Sci Fi Channel, is making no predictions, but she points out that USA's parent, NBC Universal, is cheerleading for the placement of McMahon's most popular wrestlers -- among them John Cena, Torrie Wilson, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, Carlito and Kurt Angle -- into guest spots on TV movies and original USA series like "Monk," "The Dead Zone""The Dead Zone" and "The 4400."
