Veteran USA sci-fi shows vaporized

After months of speculation, USA has officially canceled veteran sci-fi dramas "The Dead Zone" and "The 4400."

Although things didn't look good for the two series because they are older and expensive to make, during the past several months the cable network looked for ways to bring them back. But it ultimately opted to end their run.

"We wish we could keep all our great shows alive forever," said Jeff Wachtel, executive vp original programming at USA. "But we feel we need to give some of our new shows a platform to grow, and it's with great sadness that we say goodbye to two shows that had a great run and helped create the resurgence of original programming on our network and on all of cable."

"Dead Zone," which ran for six seasons, and "4400," which was on for four, had aired as a sci-fi-themed block Sunday night.

Though it had occasional hits over the years with such shows as La Femme Nikita, the network began hitting its stride only recently. The Dead Zone and Monk appeared in 2002, The 4400 was added in 2004, and Psych landed last year. At least one more drama, In Plain Sight, is on tap for 2008.

Their common thread? Slightly flawed heroes, character dramas blended with traditional "procedural" crime-solving and "really good escapism (viewers) don't have to take too seriously," Hammer says. That marks a contrast with what she calls the "darker, edgier" environs of FX, which gets more credit (though smaller audiences) for its original dramas. USA's new motto: "Characters welcome."

Lionsgate Has Senior VP of Television

Lionsgate Hires Wall as Senior VP of Television

Lionsgate announced Monday that it hired Barbara Wall as senior VP of television.

Reporting to Kevin Biggs, president of television programming and production at Lionsgate, Ms. Wall will be responsible for program development for both broadcast and cable, including half-hour comedies, hour dramas, miniseries, movies, limited series and reality programming. She also will oversee Lionsgate's current roster of series, including "House," which airs on Fox; Showtime's "Weeds"; Lifetime's "Missing"; and USA's "The Dead Zone."

Ms. Wall most recently served as executive VP of production and development for Heel and Toe Films, where she developed the pilot for "House" and the pilot for the short-lived CBS drama "Century City." Previously she served as VP of drama development at 20th Century Fox Television.
